Garden Produce and Zucchini Bread

Filed under: Baking, Gardening, Vegan — vegandiva @ 2:25 pm

Hi all. Thank you so much for your kind words in regards to my previous post. I was really relieved to hear that Selina from Vegans Rock didn’t become ill from the hummus. I am feeling much better now. I was sick that first week in July. We went to Taste on a Saturday and I became sick that Monday. We didn’t do anything for the the 4th because I wasn’t feeling good. At least I know what made me ill.

I also have some disheartening news to report about my community garden plot – produce theft! My garden plot neighbor lives near the community garden and took a walk just as it was getting dark. He walked by the garden and noticed someone on his plot. He went over to investigate and discovered a woman on his plot and a guy on our plot. He asked them what they were doing and they tried to say that our plot belonged to them. My garden neighbor said that was impossible because both plots were his and they ran! He called the police and gave him a description of the couple and the car they were in. When they ran, they dropped one of the bags of stolen produce.

I really appreciate that my garden neighbor went to investigate. Although those bastards took quite a bit of my (green) tomatoes, he caught them before they had a chance to take my special heirloom tomatoes I’m growing. My poor garden neighbor though, they took all of his eggplants and a lot of his cucumbers and other veggies. The woman who has the plot behind us had all of her cherry tomato plants stripped. We’re not sure how many plots were affected. The police said they will be driving past the park more at night.

I finally uploaded some of my garden bounty pics. I’ve picked much more than what I’ve photographed. The yellow ball squash are coming in like crazy. Yay! I was especially pleased because I grew the plants from seed. I’m lucky I got a picture of the pickling cukes. They are my favorites and normally don’t last long enough to be photographed. LOL

And I used half of this zucchini to make a zucchini bread:

This recipe for Zucchini Bread makes two loaves so I just cut the recipe in half. I added just a little bit more flour so the bread was sturdier/denser. The bread was fantastic.

I’ll be visiting and commenting on blogs this weekend. Hope you have a wonderful day!!! :-D

Betrayed by Hummus

Filed under: Vegan — vegandiva @ 7:24 am

Hi all! Yours truly was one of the people sickened by the Hummus Shirazi at Taste of Chicago (and yes I did report it to the Health Department). You can read about the samonella outbreak in this Chicago Tribune article. In additional to the stomach trouble, I had the worst case of chills in my entire life. Rob wanted to take me to the doctor but as you know, I have an aversion to doctors. Since I had already been to a doctor once this year for a sinus infection, I didn’t want to go again! I did agree that if I didn’t feel well enough to go to work that I would go to the doctor. I wasn’t feeling great but I felt well enough to go to work. Luckily in this case, I sit at a desk for most of my day and I’m not too far from the bathrooms. I stealthily chugged generic Pepto at work too. What a charming co-worker I must be. LOL

Rob felt fine because he only had a taste of the taste portion. Yes, I ate more than my fair share and boy did I pay royally for it. Rob wanted to buy more tickets and get a full size portion but being the cheap (I prefer frugal) person that I am, I said we’re out of our discounted tickets and we are not buying more.

Other than being betrayed by hummus, things are going fine. I’ve just been really busy and spending a lot of time tending to my garden in the evening. I have some garden bounty pics that I have to upload. I’ve already picked a bunch of zucchini, yellow ball squash, yellow squash, grape tomatoes, radishes, and cucumbers. I even had a few Roma tomatoes that are ripe and I picked one eggplant too.

I hope all is well with you and I hope to get my backlog of pics and posts up very soon. Thanks for all of your great comments. I will be visiting and commenting on your blogs very soon. Take Care!!! :-)

Who needs the Kwik E Mart? I doooooo….

Filed under: Chicago, Vegan — vegandiva @ 10:11 pm

As you may already know, I am an obsessive fan of the Simpsons. As luck would have it, they opened a Kwik E Mart in Chicago. Ha! Take that Detroit! :-P Here are some pics from our visit. Unfortunately, there are non-vegan foods and cigarettes pictured so this post is a one-time exception for my blog.

There were great signs like this posted around the store:

I had to ask if they had any Krusty O’s and sadly they were sold out. We did buy a pack of Buzz cola and two Squishees. It was fun to see the store and I can’t wait for the movie to open.
